Kerri Kenney-Silver is back on The A Game Podcast in this special throwback episode celebrating the release of Gail Daughtry & the Celebrity Sex Pass, the new comedy from David Wain and Ken Marino, now available digitally. The film stars Zoey Deutch, Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Ken Marino, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ben Wang, Joe Lo Truglio and Sabrina Impacciatore.
Kerri is one of the original members of MTV’s The State and has built an incredible career across comedy, television, film and music, with credits including Reno 911!, The State, Viva Variety, Role Models, Wanderlust, Wet Hot American Summer, Party Down, Miracle Workers and much more. In this conversation, she is funny, vulnerable, thoughtful and incredibly relatable about what it actually feels like to build a career in an industry filled with rejection, uncertainty and constant pressure.
We talk about anxiety, self-doubt and the stories we create in our own heads when things feel uncertain. Kerri shares one of the best mental resets in the episode: recognizing when you are “making a movie in your head” about everything that could go wrong, instead of dealing with what is actually happening in front of you.
We also get into:
- Why gratitude became an important reset button for Kerri
- How she handles rejection and uncertainty in entertainment
- Why successful people still struggle with fear and self-doubt
- The importance of focusing on what is directly in front of you
- Why she does not look at other women as competition
- How finding “your people” can completely change your life
- The incredible bond between the members of The State
- Why she still does not feel like she has “made it”
- Why fear can actually become fuel
- The creation and return of Reno 911!
- What she learned from her father, legendary voice actor Larry Kenney
- Growing up around comedy, character voices and entertainment
- Her music career with Cakelike
- UFC, Dana White and sitting ringside while eight months pregnant
- Why doing what you love matters more than reaching some imaginary finish line
One of the strongest lessons from Kerri is that success does not necessarily eliminate insecurity. Sometimes the people who keep evolving are the ones who learn how to manage that fear without allowing it to control them.
And make sure you support Kerri and the entire crew behind Gail Daughtry & the Celebrity Sex Pass. The movie follows small-town hairdresser Gail Daughtry on an increasingly ridiculous Hollywood adventure after she decides to pursue her own “celebrity pass.” It was directed by David Wain and written by Wain and Ken Marino.
